Out of the city

The DMZ, Nami Island and a red bridge over Majang Lake.

Most of what people fly to Korea for sits within two hours of Seoul. Four kinds of day out of the city, what it costs to get on each one, and what you actually see.

Where to sleep

Seoul, Busan, Jeju. Pick two and let the KTX do the rest.

Seoul for the palaces and the road north. Busan for the fish market and the temple built out over the rocks. Jeju for the crater and the divers. Gyeongju sits on the line between the first two; Sokcho and Incheon are the short hops.

Silk and timber

Rent a hanbok and Gyeongbokgung stops charging you.

Every palace in Seoul waives the entry fee if you arrive in hanbok, which is why the lanes outside the walls fill with rental shops from eight in the morning. Bukchon’s hanok streets are ten minutes uphill; Insadong’s craft alleys are ten minutes the other way.

Every hanbok and palace day →
What it costs

A day out in Korea, priced from a rented hanbok up.

Every tour on the site grouped by what it costs. The cheap end here is genuinely cheap: a palace, a market walk and a silk dress for the afternoon come in under the taxi fare to Incheon.

Under $50

Half-day border runs, hanbok rentals, palace and tower tickets, market walks and pub crawls.

$50–$120

The full days: the border with the bridge, Nami and the garden, Jeju’s UNESCO circuit, Gyeongju from Busan.

$120 and up

A guide with a car and a driver, and the long days that cross a province and come back.

Book from home

Four Korean bookings that will not wait for you to land.

Most of this country can be arranged over breakfast. These four run on passport checks, closed days and a ferry timetable that has never once cared what time your flight gets in.

  1. 01Best DMZ Tour Korea from Seoul (Red Suspension Bridge Optional)Passport details go to the army days ahead of the visit, and the whole zone shuts at short notice when the news does.
  2. 02Hanbok Rental with Gyeongbokgung Palace EntryEach Seoul palace keeps its own closed day, so a rental slot booked for the wrong morning buys you a locked gate.
  3. 03Mt. Seorak+Nami Island+Garden of Morning Calm Day Trip from SeoulNami is reached by ferry on a fixed timetable, and the last boat back is the last boat back.
  4. 04Eastern Jeju UNESCO Spots Day TourJeju is a flight, not a drive. A day tour there has to be built around the Gimpo shuttle at both ends.
Rain, then snow

Jangma soaks Seoul in July. January freezes the Han.

Korean weather arrives in two extremes and both have the same answer: get indoors and eat. The wet weeks of the summer monsoon and the fortnight in midwinter when the river ices at the edges are what the markets, the kitchens and the observation decks are for.

Busan and the south

Busan trades Seoul’s palaces for a fish market and a temple on the rocks.

Two hours forty on the KTX puts you at Jagalchi, the biggest fish market in the country, with Gamcheon’s painted hillside stacked above it and Haedong Yonggungsa sitting out over the water at the far end of the coast train. Gyeongju is an hour further inland.

Only in Korea

The 3rd Tunnel, a rented hanbok, and Seongsan at first light.

Old towns and boat trips happen everywhere in Asia. A tunnel dug under a ceasefire line, a dress that gets you through a palace gate for nothing, and a crater blown out of the seabed do not.

Ninety minutes north

The Third Tunnel

Four tunnels dug south under the border have been found since 1974, and the third runs closest to Seoul, which is the one the tours walk. You go down a long ramp in a hard hat to a concrete wall, then back up under your own steam. Above ground an observatory hands you binoculars pointed at a country you cannot enter.

Free at the gate

Hanbok at Gyeongbokgung

The shops around the palace walls dress you in the morning and keep your own clothes until evening. Wear it through the gate and the entry fee disappears, a rule meant to bring the dress back into ordinary use. It worked so completely that the lanes now photograph like a costume drama every weekend of the year.

A volcano in the sea

Seongsan Ilchulbong

A tuff cone blown out of the seabed off the eastern tip of Jeju, green crater on top, stair path up the side. It is climbed for sunrise, which is what the name means. In the water below it the haenyeo still work: women who free-dive for shellfish without tanks, most of them now well past sixty.
